Two Threads, One Era: A Special Feature on Chinese Contemporary Art

Over four decades of Chinese contemporary art, some tell the story of "I," while others gaze upon the world of "things."

From "What to Paint" to "How to Paint," this autumn sale's Chinese contemporary art special feature continues our enduring focus on and deep engagement with this lineage.

From Yue Minjun's real friends to the urban solitude and fantasy depicted by Xia Yu, Zhang Kai, Zhang Yingnan, and Song Kun; from Liu Wei's breathing green landscape to Liang Yuanwei's "process of painting flowers," Xue Song's collage of art history, and Leng Guangmin's cool cutting—this special feature brings these works together, where the two threads intertwine and run parallel.

The preview is about to open. Words can only do so much; the subtlety of brushwork and texture can only be truly felt before the original works. We warmly invite you to visit and experience it firsthand.

Preview and Auction: October 2–7
Venue address: 2/F, 3/F, 5/F & 6/F, Six Pacific Place

PhillipsX, the selling exhibition platform operated by the global Private Sales team at Phillips, is pleased to present Zao Wou-Ki: Infinite Dialogues from 6-29 March. This selling exhibition offers audiences a rare opportunity to encounter Zao’s oeuvre in dialogue with works by artists with whom he shared profound affinities, including Hans Hartung, Georges Mathieu, Sam Francis, Jean-Paul Riopelle, and others. Featuring a remarkable selection of paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and prints spanning more than seven decades of creation, the exhibition highlights the dynamic exchanges between East and West in the postwar era. Coinciding with Phillips’ West Kowloon neighbor M+’s Zao Wou-Ki: Master Printmaker, it extends a unique moment for audiences to rediscover the artist’s legacy in depth.

Zao Wou-Ki’s remarkable career was profoundly shaped by his years in Paris from the late 1940s onward, when he became immersed in a circle of artists whose ideas nurtured his reflections on painting and abstraction. In 1951, only three years after his arrival in Paris, Zao began exhibiting at the avant‑garde Galerie Pierre alongside leading abstract artists of the time, including Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Georges Mathieu, Jacques Germain, and Jean‑Paul Riopelle—who would go on to become his lifelong friend. These encounters formed a rich tapestry of artistic exchange, underscoring the networks that propelled his career and the dialogues between East and West that lie at the heart of this exhibition.

EROS/THANATOS – Gesamtkunstwerk II at Sotheby's

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

EROS/THANATOS explores the enduring tension between the forces of desire (Eros) and death (Thanatos) — twin compulsions around which the human experience perpetually turns. Drawing on mythology, psychoanalysis, and art history, the exhibition traces how artists across centuries have long dwelt in this contradiction, where desire gestures towards destruction, and beauty is an expression of decay.

Inspired by the writings of Georges Bataille, Sigmund Freud, and Carl Jung, the works on display capture moments of divine ecstasy and rapturous dissolution. From the seductive, violent energy of Francis Bacon’s Version No. 2 of Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe (1968), to the haunting skull of a Late Pleistocene Woolly Mammoth, EROS/THANATOS revels in the sublime contradiction of love, life, art and death.

EROS/THANATOS, rather than seeking to reconcile the forces of desire and death, heightens the experience of both, compelling us to linger in the places where desire burns brightest against the inevitability of its ending.
