Urban Reveries at Soluna Fine Art

Soluna Fine Art proudly presents Urban Reveries, featuring the works of four Korean artists: Choi Young-Bin, Lee Ja-Young, Park Jong-Ho, and Yoon Dong-Chun. In collaboration with SYHY PROJECT, a Korean curatorial group dedicated to introducing talented emerging Korean artists, this exhibition aims to explore the intimate sensibilities and perspectives of individual artists rooted in Seoul, layered with the temporal and existential dimensions of urban experience.

Through each work, viewers are invited to wander the city’s emotional landscape, tracing the faint echoes of presence that linger in its corners. Four artists from four different generations, all currently based in Seoul and working across various media, present works that evoke specific memories or emotions, creating distinct sensory layers that together form a synesthetic harmony. As these works are displayed in the new context of Hong Kong, we hope the urban fragments and artistic expressions conveyed by Seoul will reach local audiences with a quiet yet profound resonance.

Inheriting the essence of Korean monochrome movement, Oh challenges the conventional notions of paintings by incorporating scribbles, objects and collages into his works. Covering the monochromatic background with repetitive numbers, sometimes interrupted by the presence of everyday objects, Oh’s works resemble a childhood diary or chalkboard doodles. He uses simple pictorial language, in which each symbol is open to interpretation, inviting the audiences to reconnect with their own memory and reclaim the lost innocence of their inner child.

Summer Tapestry at Soluna Fine Art

Soluna Fine Art is proud to present Summer Tapestry, a summer group show spotlighting Kim Ha-Young, Kim Yong-Chul, Rosalyn Ng, Park Yoon-Kyung, and Jon Poblador. Bursting with uplifting colors and narratives, the featured vivid works of acrylic paintings and mixed media illuminate the essence of summer, unleashing boundless creativity and captivating viewers’ senses. Summer Tapestry will be on view from 7 July - 31 August 2023.

In Kim Ha-Young’s painting series, Augmented Vision, the tangerine horizon and the ovals, like the windows of a ready-to-soar airplane, capture the essence of adventure and limitless possibilities that lie within the season of summer.

Kim Yong-Chul’s portrayal of nature using bright green colors transports viewers into a serene habitat of lush trees and a pond, teeming with vibrant birdlife.

Meanwhile, Rosalyn Ng’s abstract mixed media works, which are inspired by the artist’s nascent feelings and organic forms from nature, depict atmospheric shades of blues that encourage the viewers to explore their own imaginative landscapes.

Park Yoon-Kyung’s dynamic brushworks exude lively hues that convey a sense of energy and movement, revealing both abstraction and figurative elements that inspire viewers' interpretations.

Jon Poblador’s minimalist monochromatic paintings also effectively convey radiance and warmth of colors. Subtle glows of light can even be detected on his works of immaculate smooth textures while simultaneously challenging the traditional notion of materiality and forms.

The name Tapestry refers to the visual narrative of diverse artistic expressions, forming an interconnected tapestry of emotions and ideas embodying the spirit of the summer season. The exhibition will also invite the visitors to weave their own narratives as they traverse the gallery space, appreciating the diversity of artistic expressions.

Kim Jee-Yun: m<other> at Soluna Fine Art

Soluna Fine Art is proud to present m<other>, the first solo exhibition of Hong Kong-based Korean photographer Kim Jee-Yun with the gallery. The exhibition features photographs and video work from Kim's decade-long experiential documentary project, depicting children born to interracial marriages and their mothers.

The documentary project began with the artist's personal storytelling about her intermarriage and mixed-race children. Since its inception in 2010, m<other> has been interested in racial awareness and perceptions towards child-mother's different external appearances, and the development of self-representation in mixed-race teenagers after Kim's child turned teen. Hong Kong, the city where the artist currently resides, is an intersection between the West and the East that simultaneously give rise to interracial families and concerns for their children's identity, which varies depending on the age, level of education and the environment they grow up in. The complicated relations between individual attitudes and the sense of group position vary, and mixed-race teenagers, who begin to undergo emotional and societal development, further force us to consider between "descent" and "consent" about identity.

Through the collaboration between the artist and gallery, we are also pleased to donate ten percent of the exhibition sales towards Mother's Choice, a local charity organization serving many children without families and pregnant teenagers in Hong Kong. Furthermore, this event will be sponsored by LG OLED.

“I dreamed I was a butterfly, flitting around in the sky; then I awoke. Now I wonder: Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man?.”

 Zhuangzi (Chuang-tzu; 莊子)
The Butterfly as Companion: Meditations on the First Three Chapters of the Chuang-Tzu, 369 BCE to 286 BCE
<Paraphrased from the original version>

The butterfly dream parable by Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi has deep roots in Taoist thoughts toward defining reality versus illusion, explaining that our awareness of happy existence and self-contentment can consciously transform the fixed reality. However, nature, the living system, is not free from chaos—when unpredictable plagues and earthquakes emerge catastrophically outside of our control. A butterfly, an organism most robbed of the power to inflict pain on others, cannot be romanticized for its only delightful aspects without considering its ephemeral life cycles of instability.

Jeong Myoung-Jo: The Paradox of Beauty at Soluna Fine Art

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Soluna Fine Art is pleased to present ‘The Paradox of Beauty’, the first solo exhibition of the contemporary Korean hyperrealist painter Jeong Myoung-Jo with the gallery. To commemorate the month of September, which signals the seasonal transition from summer to fall, Jeong’s exhibition showcases a total of 13 works from the artist’s signature oeuvre depicting the women in traditional Korean finery, the hanbok, across different seasons of life and class. ‘The Paradox of Beauty’ will be on view from 16 September – 25 October 2022.

There are deeper implications behind Jeong Myoung-Jo’s painting series, apart from the exterior beauty of the embellishments that the audience may be drawn to at first glance. In addition to the hidden faces of the women, the iconographic interpretations of the background, dresses, hairstyles, jewelry, and motifs give clues to the paradoxical meanings in beauty and status that span from the dawn of history to the modern age in Korea. For example, the backgrounds in the paintings could be distinguished into vibrant color and dark themes, illuminating the subjects’ societal positions and underlying attitudes.

Soluna Fine Art is proud to present “Reflection”, a summer group exhibition consists of seven artists that are represented by our gallery, including Kim Young-Hun, Lee Kyou-Hong, Kim Joon-Yong, Park Yoon-Kyung, Jon Poblador, Park Ji-Sook and Jang Young-Sook. “Reflection” will be on view from 7 July – 3 September 2022.

In celebration of the sunny days ahead of us this season, the pieces included in the show are colourful and vibrant yet tied together harmoniously, arranged in a way that presents the works together in a new light. The name “Reflection”, in a literal sense, refers to the image reflected off a mirror-like surface. The reflected image can be an accurate representation of the original, or sometimes a distorted version depending on one’s perspective. Our exhibition then implores the viewers to look within themselves, to not only appreciate the art works as it is but also ponder their sense-of-self in relation to it. We hope our audience can be challenged in their ways of seeing and to inspire personal reflection through the exhibiting works in the show.

Soluna Fine Art is pleased to present 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 聖所, a solo exhibition by Jon Poblador (b.1971, Quezon City in the Philippines). 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 聖所 is the artist's first exhibition with Soluna Fine Art, and we are glad to showcase his minimalist works characterized by monochromes, repetitions, and mark-making.

Jon Poblador has always lived a nomadic life, including in the Philippines, America, Singapore, China, France, and now resides in Hong Kong. Pablador's artistic practice shifted from figurative to conceptual pieces later in his career. His works initially consisted of tightly packed lines of text before evolving to dots, triangles, rectangles, and eventually the grid system he primarily produces today. As he keeps on repeating the buildup process, he realized there is a higher personal meaning behind the action itself.

To him, his paintings are the 'accumulations' of his devotional acts by painting on the individual grid sections with thin acrylic layers, similarly, practicing virtue requires the same buildup as well. His canvas then acts as a ‘sanctuary’ for him to explore the endless possibilities of how duality can be represented, from order-disorder to perfection-imperfection through the slightest deviations of the grid squares.

Park Yoon-Kyung: The Attitude that Sustains Our Lives at Soluna Fine Art

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Soluna Fine Art is pleased to present Park Yoon-Kyung's solo exhibition 'The Attitude that Sustains Our Lives' in Hong Kong. It marks Park's second solo exhibition with Soluna Fine Art and our extension of a recent successful show in Art Central featuring the artist's ground-breaking 'Yi Tai' (also known as 'Painting Tower') painting installation. 'The Attitude that Sustains Our Lives' will be on view from 16 July - 28 August 2021, opening on 16 July 2021, 10-6 PM.

Park Yoon-Kyung was born in South Korea in 1976 and received her MFA from the University of London and Hongik University in South Korea. During her time in London, Park discovered the method of painting on silk and chiffon, which then became the huge turning point for her artistic career. By applying multiple layers of paint on translucent materials, she cleverly combines the recto and the verso of a canvas, exposing the space behind and turning all three spaces into one work. Much like Lucio Fontana and his well-acclaimed Spatial Concept Series, Park's work breaks down the boundaries between dimensions but with more subtlety.

Kim Young Hun: Electronic Nostalgia at Soluna Fine Art

Soluna Fine Art is pleased to present Kim Young-Hun’s solo exhibition ‘Electronic Nostalgia’. This exhibition showcases vibrantly colored oil paintings by the artist that are inspired by the Korean landscape and digital screen glitches.

Living through the transition between the analog generation and digital generation, Kim Young-Hun is passionate in observing and deciphering the unknown between the 1 and 0 of binary codes. For Kim, such incomprehensibility intrigues him to create disoriented and euphoric paintings: Inspirations such as stripe covered light bulbs, white noise from digital screens, and invisible vibrations from string instruments allow Kim’s works, in his wordings, to “…generate an electronic-like abstract painting language that interferes with some parts of the ambiguous boundaries of our ever-changing digital or reality lives”.

Soluna Fine Art is delighted to present Kim Keun-Tai’s solo exhibition KOAN in Hong Kong. This exhibition is a collaboration with Art Chosun from South Korea. This exhibition showcases Kim’s work with his approach towards the Asian wisdom and oriental philosophy. With organic earth elements, his work focuses on seeking the true definition of the origin of the material. In this exhibition, Kim embraced the enlightenment he captured from the Earth material, transformed it onto the canvas with his unique method of creation. KOAN will be on view from 11 March 2021 to 30 April 2021.

KOAN pronounced Kōan/gong’an, refers to a story, or a dialog that happened in the process of achieving enlightenment of the Zen masters in ancient times. It is a paradox that requires meditation to train the Zen masters to ultimately abandon their reliance on reasoning and push them to acquire a sudden enlightenment.
