Elisa Sighicelli: Petite Rats at Rossi & Rossi

Elisa Sighicelli: Petite Rats at Rossi & Rossi

Looking like they are just stretching and taking a break from being exhibited these bronze sculptures by Degas were photographed the storerooms of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo. Unintentional juxtaposition, single light source and museum labels paradoxically make petit ballerinas more alive and real, emphasizing material, texture, and accidental storytelling.
The title of the show is a reference to “les petits rats”, term that was used for young ballerinas at the Paris Opera. Most of them were from poor families, and in no way their life was glamorous or easy.
