I write about every exhibition I went to, and I go to almost every exhibition there is in Hong Kong. I shoot and edit my own photos for this blog.
I enjoy visiting artists and seeing their studios. I show them the way I see them, hopefully revealing something interesting.
I’m a proudly independent art blogger with no affiliation to any organisation. I blog because I love art and support the artists.

Over the past two months at Para Site’s 10/F space, Sam Lui has devoted her residency tothe reflection and retelling of ‘Wendy’s Wok World’—a persona-driven project thatunpacks the disciplinary world of wok-cooking alongside questions of purity, secrecy, andauthenticity. Through the Bad Purity Book Club and her studio research, Sam hascollected and deepened her conception of how authority and identity are performed, fractured, and concealed.
In this closing gathering, Sam is joined by Wendy, who rarely appears at the same time. When both are present in the same room—artist and persona, self and other—what kind ofdialogue emerges? What is purity to them, what secrets do they carry, and where doesauthenticity reside? Blending narratives, (auto)biographies, and performances, Saminvites us to witness these layered conversations take shape.
This gathering also marks the final day of Sam’s residency, a chance to bring togetherfriends and communities in celebration. Join us to close this chapter together.
Performance at 5:30pm
Can a trickle reverse a stream? Can a loss mitigate a loss?
This public gathering traces the hidden currents within hydrological cycles, weather patterns, and financial systems. Hosted in response to the exhibition ‘Empty Set’ by Pratchaya Phinthong, the symposium opens a nebulous space to connect research, art, science, performance and other speculative practices in conversation together.
Bringing together artists, weather-forecasters, scientists, and other thinkers from the region, the programme asks: what role do ideas of risk, deep-time perspectives and other speculative instruments play in relation to our understanding of ‘tipping points’? If societal stability is a delicate balance, what futures do its various relationships hold, and what erupts when its various cycles change or break?
Participants: Jaime Chu, Peter Clift, Dr Jimmy Jiao, Kwan Q Li, Lucy Siyao Liu, Gary Zhexi Zhang

As part of the ongoing artist residency, an Open Studio will be held at HART Haus, where visitors are invited to preview Min-Jia’s artistic process and encounter a selection of works developed over time. This intimate presentation offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the artist’s creative journey before the exhibition opens at PODIUM, highlighting the reflections, gestures, and craft that shape her artistic language.
On this occasion, two kinetic shadow puppets from Min-Jia’s ongoing series Mother I–IV (2024–2025) will be on view. Conceived as a cycle recalling the four seasons, the Mother works embody the perpetual interplay of birth, death, and renewal through spectral, backlit figures whose mechanical forms cast uncanny silhouettes. In Mother II (Winter), chilling blue tones and braided strands twist into gyrating forms that evoke serpents and aeroplanes, conjuring rhythms of migration and cycles of transformation. In Mother IV (Summer), the figure proliferates into a hybrid moth with oscillating antennae, embodying both vitality and restraint, as straps and belts twist its body into tension. Together, these works capture Min-Jia’s exploration of cyclical existence, where life and lifelessness, bondage and renewal, are held in fragile balance.
Open Studio: 11-13.9.2025
Venue address: 3/F Cheung Hing Industrial Building, 12P Smithfield, Kennedy Town

For the inaugural session, we are honoured to welcome esteemed ceramic artist Rosanna Li, whose remarkable half-century career has shaped the soul of the city through her works of clay. With deft hands, she sculpts the essence of everyday life—her iconic, plump figurines have not only graced museums and galleries but have also animated public spaces, like the airport, MTR station and bustling streets. These rotund, cheerful companions, with their soothing smiles, have become a balm for urban fatigue, weaving themselves into the collective memory of Hong Kong people.

This two-day assembly departs from Ha Bik Chuen’s ‘motherboards’ and the citizen-initiated conservation work ‘Sesudah banjir itu (When the flood is over)’ to reflect on how we engage with histories we didn’t live through, practices we didn’t invent, and stories we may never fully resolve. Moving between physical objects and conceptual infrastructures, the assembly explores how intimacy can be shaped—and even deepened—by distance: through glass, across generations, within structures of care.
Participants: Nasikin Ahmad, Hidayatul Azmi, Merve Bedir, Mark Chung, Özge Ersoy, Ruhaeni Intan, Marianus Nuwa, Grace Samboh, Vivian Ting, Sidhi Vhisatya, Michelle Wong

“Sonic Transitions: Auditory Stories of Female New Immigrants in Hong Kong” is a sound art exhibition exploring how female new immigrant artists use sound to express personal auditory narratives intertwined with urban life.
The exhibition features 10 new works created by 12 artists. Using sound as the primary medium, these works transform auditory memories into artistic expressions, presenting a rich array of cultural and emotional narratives.
Focusing on “transition,” the exhibition examines female mobility, listening, and sonic expression in public spaces. The artworks simulate the flow and intersection of sonic elements across shifting contexts, constructing a dynamic auditory space for continuous dialogue where the works of female artists intertwine, allowing sound to wander and flow through the space. This fosters invisible exchanges and interactions, forming a multi-layered network of sonic narratives.

PORTALS is the final commissioned work of ‘The Embrace and the Passage’, concluding the exhibition’s dialogue on shifting host-guest dynamics. This site-specific performanceinvites audiences to traverse both material and symbolic portals within the space through collective rituals.
Leading up to the performance, the artist hosted workshops in Hong Kong where participants crafted figurines that form a shared, transcendent presence along her own embodiment, Vera Maningning, whose name means ‘the light of truth.’ Clad in white lace—a motif resonant in both Filipino households and Western rituals—she inhabits this figure to embody a spectrum of fluid identities. At the performance, through singing, shapeshifting, and healing practices inspired by pre- and postcolonial Filipino shamanism, she casts the foreign, trans body as a sanctuary of queer struggle and survival, overcomingthe imposed borders of geography and power that continue to shape our world.
Participants are encouraged to bring a personally significant object to join the artist during the performance.
