Graphic Design in Japan 2023 (Hong Kong Edition) at PMQ

Organised by PMQ and the Japan Graphic Design Association (JAGDA), the exhibition “Graphic Design in Japan 2023 (Hong Kong Edition)” will take place from 10 April to 5 May at PMQ.

The JAGDA Awards have long commanded prestige within the Japanese graphic design profession. In collaboration with JAGDA, PMQ premiered the exhibition in Hong Kong in 2019. It returned glamorously last year, again displaying exceptional contemporary Japanese works to Hong Kong audiences. The past exhibitions’ successes buttressed this collaboration, enabling our third jointly curated showing.

PMQ is privileged to be the sole international venue for this exhibition which presents over 300 distinguished masterpieces spanning diverse applications, including but not limited to those by the 25th Yusaku Kamekura Design Awardees Tomohiro OKAZAKI and Haruka MISAWA, as well as JAGDA New Designer Awardees Kako FUJITA and Naonori YAGO. Furthermore, through participating in programmes such as design dialogues and designer-led tours, attendees may gain perspectives shared by practitioners from both Japan and Hong Kong, and engage in prospective discourse with such design professionals.

All events are offered free of charge and on a first-come, first-served basis. You may register via this link: https://pmq.hk/oUx3w

Venue address: SG03 – SG07, Staunton, PMQ

Tai Kwun Conversations: Prison Series – Healing Walls: The Restorative Power of Art

The “Healing Walls” (2004) project led by Mural Arts Philadelphia cherishes the artistic partnership among men in prison, victims of crime, and victim advocates, and helps break down barriers between them. Originally conceived as a single, collaborative work, the plan fell apart when the two groups could not be united in their views. Instead, two murals—Prisoner’s Journey and Victim’s Journey by Cesar Viveros and Parris Stancell—were created adjacent to each other. During the creative process, the project took on a life of its own and it started bridging very profound gaps between people.

This session of Tai Kwun Conversations addresses the healing and restorative power of art and highlights its capacity to facilitate dialogue on difficult issues—such as, punishment, remorse, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It begins with a film screening of Concrete, Steel and Paint (55 mins), followed by conversations with the speakers.

The conversations will be conducted in English, with English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. Book now.

Speakers:

Jane Golden | Executive Director of Mural Arts Philadelphia

Tony Heriza | Director of the film Concrete, Steel and Paint

Julie & Jesse: Meet the Artist and Guided Tour at Novalis Art Design

Julie & Jesse will be present for a guided tour of the exhibition ‘For What It’s Worth: Ceramic Experimentations by Julie & Jesse.‘ Rust, used cardboard wrapper, ceramic shards, roadside saplings — these are all things that we come in contact with on a regular basis, yet are so ordinary that we don’t usually register having seen them by the end of the day, and may even want to remove them to tidy up a place. But for Julie & Jesse, what are considered useless and unwanted to most are treasures to them. Each find becomes an opportunity to unpack stories across time and space, hidden within the material. The duo’s eye for curiosity and investigative approach have not only driven their entire creative practice — it is how they make sense of the world. The new works presented in this exhibition are both documentation and fruition of their ceramic experimentations in the past decade. What they create is a testimony to their superb technical skills, but it is always poetic and personal.

Memory Court: the Soundings of Things at Para Site

A semi-improvised lecture performance with sounds and objects
Created by Linda Chiu-han Lai with Longman Luk and Valerie Mak

Episode 1: Tree of Life in the Memory Garden | Episode 2: The Narrow Passage to truths | Episode 3: Forensics | Episode 4: Insights | Episode 5: Micro Narratives | Episode 6: Sand Adrift, Dust Afloat

‘Memory Court’ is a material space to invoke the limits of interpretation andrepresentational practices. Language becomes sounding. Bodies connect with sounds.Motions evolve in space into eclectic object events. Dialectic structures take overhermeneutic circles.

In six short episodes, ‘Memory Court’ is a performative response to Matteo Ricci’s‘memory palace’, Aby Warburg’s non-verbal art history experiment Mnemosyne Atlas,Gerhard Richter’s anomic archive Atlas, Martha Rosler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen andYvonne Rainer’s Trio A: the Mind is Muscle—all embodied in an assemblage event the artisthas developed with the Floating Projects.

‘Memory Court’ is far from a cosy-intimate personal space. The artist thinks of it as a crimescene re-enacted with objects on trial while a court stenographer tenaciously records themulti-sensorial events with improvised strategies. ‘Memory Court’ could be a lecture performance, but it surely evolves into an object event, tangentially connected with the installations Tree of Life and Bamboo Percussive currently onview at ‘signals…瞬息’.

Desperately Seeking Lauren: Yeewan Koon in Conversation with Angela Su at M+

In response to her 2022 Venice Biennale presentation, Angela Su produced an installation of more than 400 items on loan from the archives of Lauren O at the Esalen Institute in California. However, very little is known about this enigmatic figure who was arguably involved in a 1967 plan to levitate the Pentagon in protest of the Vietnam War. Who is Lauren O? How is this obscure levitator from 1960s America relevant to the world that we live in today?

Su, together with Dr Yeewan Koon, who has conducted extensive research on Lauren O, will take a deep dive into the counterculture of the 1960s in the US. Their conversation will cover the confluence of social movements, psychedelics, supernatural and popularisation of technology that gave rise to a fascinating era of change and infinite possibilities. Through Lauren O’s cosmological views and her vision of the future, one could also make sense of Su’s own practice, in particular, her fascination with worldbuilding.

This talk will be conducted in English. Simultaneous interpretation in Cantonese and Mandarin will be available. Click on ‘Register’ to sign up for free. Participants can access General Admission exhibitions (excluding Special Exhibition) after the event. Please retain a copy of your registration to facilitate your entry to the galleries.

This talk is co-organised by M+ and Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Meet the Artists <Sex Be With You> at Novalis Art Design

Don’t miss your chance to meet the artists of <Sex Be With You>! The artists will be here so drop by for a chill chat on the following dates.

FLORENCE LAM: 26 August Sat, 3 - 5:30 pm

Novalis Art Design is pleased to present “Sex Be With You,” a group show curated by Charmaine Tam featuring artists Batten and Kamp, IV Chan, FlorenceLam, and Lau Hong Lam. Sex is everywhere. We are surrounded by sex, especially in this modern consumerist age, where sex or the promise of it has been used to sell products through a near constant bombardment of imagery. The ready availability of online porn and other digital media has made the rampant consumption of sex possible. The proliferation of sexualisation in mainstream media has made it less taboo. Sex out of marriage is no longer frowned upon, we are urged to celebrate our own sexuality. This is indeed a thing to be celebrated! And yet, with sex becoming commonplace, it seems to have led to an increase in the mindless consumption of it. More and more people are increasingly blind to the power of sex, that in any act of sex, power is being exerted on, or being taken away from someone or something. Sex and power are inherently intertwined with each other. This exhibition is an invitation to both the audience and the artists to re-examine this relationship between sex and power that permeates our society.

French Rendezvous@Tai Kwun: TAI KWUN CONVERSATIONS - HERITAGE IN TIMES OF WAR

As wars occur in various places around the world, cultural heritage is put in jeopardy. To protect endangered sites and artefacts that are part of local identity and universal heritage, preservation initiatives are taking place at the heart of conflict areas. Why is cultural heritage preservation important in the midst of a humanitarian crisis? How do at-risk archaeologists, conservators, and cultural workers operate in dangerous and uncertain environments? How to rebuild and display cultural heritage in exhibition spaces for sharing with the public? From political decision to public display, this programme aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting cultural heritage in conflict-affected areas. It introduces actual fieldworks and innovations to trace the journey of heritage preservation in times of war.

The Museum Summit 2023

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China is staging the Museum Summit 2023 on 24 and 25 March, with a view to providing a platform for the exchange and interflow of expert experience and innovative ideas on the latest developments and transformations of museums across the world.

The Museum Summit in 2023 is now in its third edition. In 2017, the LCSD, in collaboration with the Palace Museum, hosted the first Museum Summit to mark the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. The second Museum Summit in 2019 was held in partnership with the British Museum. Riding on the success of the previous two Museum Summits, we are enlisting the Gallerie degli Uffizi, in Italy, as our international partner for the forthcoming Summit 2023.

As practitioners in the museum and cultural sectors of the present day, we often find ourselves engaging in collaborative and interactive relationships between various parties, or situated at crossroads between multiple ideological assumptions or propositions. The decisions we make and the resulting implications shape and map our future directions and the way forward. “Between” is the key concept of relevance to our Museum Summit 2023. The term can be used to refer to the time, space or differences that separate, unite or associate two or multiple things, people, places or ideas. Pivoting on this overarching theme of “Between”, the Museum Summit 2023 will feature international speakers sharing their professional insights on aspects of the cultural and museum worlds of today. These include topics such as cultural exchanges between places; the reinvention of old and new cultural facilities; the connection between museums and their communities; and the online and offline integration made possible by new technologies. Apart from the keynote and main presentations, there will also be visiting programmes organised to complement the event.

Register for the event.

Annual Artist’s Lecture | ruangrupa at Asia Art Archive

This year’s Annual Artist’s Lecture, hosted at CCG Library, welcomes Ade Darmawan and farid rakun from ruangrupa as our guest speakers. ruangrupa is a Jakarta-based contemporary art collective that provides platforms for exhibitions, workshops, critical thinking, and research. Most recently, ruangrupa provided collective artistic direction based on the core values of lumbung for documenta fifteen in Kassel, Germany. In this conversation, Darmawan and rakun reflect on the historical conditions that make independent art spaces necessary, as well as recent debates on collectivity and resource sharing in the arts.

ruangrupa is a Jakarta-based collective established in 2000. It is a non-profit organisation that fosters arts thinking within urban and cultural contexts by engaging artists with other disciplines such as the social sciences, politics, technology, and media to open up critical observations and perspectives towards contemporary urban issues in Indonesia

A breakfast reception will be held at the library from 10–11am.

Free Public Access. RSVP required.

Hong Kong Shifts: Hong Kong Included

Our signature event, Hong Kong Included, is back!

We are thrilled to invite you to our upcoming exhibition and community event at the House Studio from 12-14 January 2023. In the past three years, Hong Kong Shifts has been whizzing around all corners of the city to source stories of strength, positivity and resilience from people who make this city tick, discreetly in the background.

Discover our latest collection of community stories, learn from inspiring NGO guest speakers, get involved in fun and interactive storytelling activities, make new friends, enjoy some good music and drinks…and, perhaps, stumble upon a surprise or two!

The theme for this year’s event is: Empowerment through Storytelling. What is your story? When do you get to tell your story? What is their story and why does it matter? What is the power of storytelling and how can it help us live happier lives and strengthen bonds in our living and working environments? Come join us and our community partners EmpowerU, Love 21 and Teen’s Key to celebrate social inclusion, human connection and the power of storytelling! City Mental Health Alliance HK will share their perspectives on the relevance of inclusivity and connection for mental health in the workplace.

Come and meet them!

Get your tickets here.

Venue address: House Studio, Soho House 33 Des Voeux Road West
