James Richards & Mason Leaver-Yap: Some Contamination

Developed during their August residency at Para Site, artist James Richards and writer Mason Leaver-Yap present a live programme of video, text, and music. This collagistic event draws on the pair’s outputs and influences. Taking inspiration from ideas of togetherness and departure as manifested on a cellular and social level, the long-time collaborators present their material in dialogue with works by other artists and writers. This relay considers and builds a network of resonances, loops, and contaminations.

Para Site’s International Residency Programme aims to cultivate dialogue and connect Hong Kong with thought leaders who are shaping narratives, conversations, and practices in contemporary art both regionally as well as beyond. The residency is envisioned as an open-ended platform that nurtures exchanges between participants and the local and regional art scenes, encouraging studio visits, talks, screenings, performances, and various other collaborative activities.

Registration is required here.
The event is in English.

Kongkee: Moon in the Water at Tomorrow Maybe

Greek philosopher Heraclitus had a famous analogy about life: "You cannot step twice into the same river". Time cannot travel backward, everything is always in a state of becoming. The only certainty is change, as such each moment is unique. During the process of making animation, with the help of software and tools, characters can flow fluidly back and forth in time, as though existing beyond time itself. Travelling between dimensions, pasts and futures and grabbing hold of the most precious moments, the ending has always already been drawn out for the animation characters. In “reality” we are unable to see the future and there is no way of reading the script of our lives. We are part of the current of time. There is a feeling that our destiny, unfinished, is still to be written.

Is this true? Are our destinies still to be written out? Or do we live in this illusion?
