VASEBYSU: Echoes of the Earthat JPS Gallery

In the abandoned streets of Chernobyl, nature did not wait for permission to reclaim what humans left behind. Flowers erupted through cracked pavements, vines strangled street signs, and roots invaded the remnants of human lives. This silent revolution of the natural world inspired “Echoes of the Earth”, a riveting new exhibition by Hong Kong artist duo VASEBYSU, opening at JPS Gallery Hong Kong on June 6th.

This exhibition reframes the 1986 Chernobyl disaster into a powerful meditation on renewal by revealing the paradoxical beauty that emerges when nature reclaims spaces abandoned after history’s worst nuclear catastrophe. Through three distinct yet interconnected installations, the artists pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives while challenging viewers to reconsider their fundamental relationship with the natural world.

Dan Oliver: Moment At JPS Gallery

We live in a time when our minds constantly wander between past regrets and future anxieties, leaving us disconnected from the present that unfolds before us. Dan Oliver’s solo exhibition Moment explores this paradox through a series of contemplative paintings that capture fleeting instances of beauty and meaning discovered in the natural world.

The exhibition’s origins date back to 2020 when the global pandemic prompted Oliver to establish a daily ritual of taking long walks. During his time in nature, Oliver became acutely aware of how multiple realities coexist simultaneously: the stirring tales of animal endeavours, the rhythmic cycle of seasons, and nature’s perpetual dance of creation and destruction. More often than not, nature’s continuous transformations mirror our own experiences of loss, renewal, and adaptation. As the artist himself observes, “In nature we can forget ourselves, and see ourselves, both.”

CAUTION: This Exhibition May Cause Spontaneous Laughter and Pleasant Confusion

Attention, art aficionados, weirdness enthusiasts, and connoisseurs of the gloriously bizarre! JPS Gallery Hong Kong is about to be invaded by the delightfully twisted mind of artist Joe Foti. Born in Queens, New York, in 1962, Foti has been orchestrating visual marvels for the luxury brand Chrome Hearts' Art and Science Division since 1990. His artistic vision can be likened to that of a modern-day alchemist, creating art that is a harmonious amalgamation of disparate objects that, against all odds, coalesce into cohesive and thought-provoking masterpieces. Opening on March 20th, Foti's first solo exhibition, "Souvenirs, Novelties, Party Tricks", in Hong Kong, will be one part fever dream, two parts nostalgia, and a whole lot of "What the F*** is that?"

"If you're a baker, making bread, you're a baker. If you make the best bread in the world, you're not an artist, but if you bake the bread in the gallery, you're an artist. So the context makes the difference."

—Marina Abramovic

Visual artist Afa Annfa and food stylist Gloria Chung will present their first duo solo exhibition at JPS Gallery Hong Kong. Inspired by an iconic quote from conceptual and performance artist Marina Abramovic, this unique showcase explores the complex relationship between authentic and artificial food, examining their artistic significance and symbolic meanings. The exhibition, titled A&G Boulangerie, focuses specifically on bread and butter—staple foods that hold profound cultural significance in our lives.

The exhibition space will be divided into two distinct zones: a meaningful kitchen island in the main room and an altar area that adds a sacred dimension to the everyday act of breaking bread. This dual arrangement fosters an engaging dialogue between the mundane and the divine.

A halo, a symbol of holiness, traditionally depicted as a circular or arched manifestation of light encircling the head of a revered figure, takes on a fresh representation in Hong Kong artist Kazy Chan’s upcoming solo exhibition, The Twist of a Halo. By challenging the fixed preconceptions that often stifle our creativity and understanding, Kazy distorts and reimagines this ethereal symbol through various mediums in hopes that viewers can reflect on the ever-changing nature of their perceptions and knowledge of the world.

As depicted by a myriad of artists, halos are products of imagination, and their true form remains unknown, allowing for endless interpretations ranging from a simple representation of radiance in the form of a circle to evolving into a symbol of the Trinity in the shape of a cross. All of the halos in Kazy’s works exhibit the artist’s unrestricted flow and adhere to spontaneity. This creative motion holds significant importance to him as only until the beams of light converge and close into a ring can the ultimate form be ascertained. It is precisely because of its boundless potential that the halo remains malleable, welcoming constant exploration and deliberate distortions.

When you think of ‘family’, what comes to mind? Perhaps it is the gingerbread house your family built last Christmas or the comforting embrace of your spouse after a long day at work. American artist Paul Hunter Speagle is set to make a triumphant return to Hong Kong with a new solo exhibition titled The Speagle’s. This unique showcase invites you to enter the artist’s home and meet his endearing family. In a refreshing departure from the ‘perfect family’ facade we often see, Speagle presents a realistic and unfiltered portrayal of the daily encounters within his home. These are experiences that many of us can relate to yet purposely keep hidden from the public eye. Whether it is family disputes or the rising pile of kitchen table bills, this exhibition serves as a beacon of truth and clarity in a world of idealised depictions of family life.

Welcome to somewhere Over the Rainbow! You will see my art creations inspired by the story of The Wizard of Oz on your journey to Emerald City.

The story is about a group of fellow travellers, each of whom lacks self-confidence and feels a sense of inferiority, who set out for the Emerald City to gain something they lack. Along the way, they face various hardships and wonderful encounters that help each of them grow stronger and happier.

This exhibition combines these stories and my characters, the friends of Green Cow Garden. I think we all have complexes, big or small. I believe that as we go through life, we overcome our complexes and shortcomings to create a fulfilling world for ourselves. I would be delighted to be a part of your story as you joyfully walk through it.

Please enjoy accompanying them on their journey to the Emerald City.

JPS Gallery Hong Kong proudly presents Moon Lands On Man, our first show in celebration of the gallery’s 10th anniversary. The show will kick off with a fully immersive large-scale cardboard installation straight out of every child’s fantasy, but hidden within this fantastical dreamland is an unseen world riddled with moon landing conspiracy theories.

Whether the Apollo 11 mission was an elaborate hoax has been a long-standing debate, with many conspiracy theorists claiming that the U.S. government faked the moon landing for different motives. Although the arguments presented by the conspiracy theorists have been discredited and debunked by scientific facts, many people continue to believe that the moon landing was faked. For this exhibition, Moon Lands On Man, American artist Barminski will put a humorous and pessimistic twist on this highly controversial and polarising topic.

Barminski described his cardboard artworks as simultaneously real and fake as it depends on the viewer’s expectation. If they expect it to be a real Star Wars toy, then it’s fake. If they expect it to be a piece of art, then it’s real. A toy utopia lives within everyone’s heart, but societal issues that warrant their attention and insight continue to exist, so Barminski’s dark yet humorous take on these topics encourages everyone to discover the truth behind authenticity and falsehood.

JPS Gallery is thrilled to present Summer Breeze, a solo exhibition of August Vilella, which will be on view at the gallery’s Hong Kong location in LANDMARK ATRIUM. After his recent shows in Art Basel Miami, Art Basel Hong Kong, and TEFAF New York, this exhibition is a continuation of August’s solo exhibition Autumn Dreams in 2021. It marks the artist’s evolution of art and showcases his astonishing new works, which depict dreamy summer imagery inspired by the constantly changing seasons. August’s new series features his signature big-eyed characters, leading viewers to be entranced in surreal and intuitive meditation.

August creates whimsical paintings using the Surrealist automatism technique, without any prior sketches or ideas, guided solely by his subconscious mind. His exaggerated-eyed creatures not only portray the artist’s inner voice but also engage in a conversation with the audience. The artist himself has said, “I don’t choose my characters… in some way they choose me.” August’s creative process is like jazz, intentionally unconscious play that visualises the hidden realm of his inner universe.

Edu Carrillo: Painting Is Such A Big Problem For Painters at JPS Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Edu Carrillo’s solo exhibition at the JPS gallery proposes an X-ray of the painter’s craft. It could even be said that it is an analysis of painting. However, caution is called for: painting is always a problem.

The canvases that Carrillo brings together in this project are precise and direct snapshots of the act of painting in a period of great intensity and almost feverish production. The artist wants to investigate in depth the anatomy of painting, what is inside and underneath its surface. But he does not want to discover it, much less demonstrate it from a theoretical or discursive point of view, but from practice. His research goes through painting, canvas after canvas, spending countless hours in the studio waiting for a short-circuit, lingering for the arrival of a wound in the painting. Something uncertain, a kind of opening that the painter himself cannot foresee but which sometimes, rarely, happens and raises other fundamental questions: Will he recognise and accept the novelty of it? Is he ready for it? Is it the right moment to change lanes? More problems…

It is a place of life. All life, the earth and the universe cannot exist without one another.

Light, sky, water, nature, and of course, love and hope are necessary for human BIOTOP.

The nutrients are dreaming, imagining, and moving forward into the future.

A place where there is life,
where there is love and hope,

Sweeping Vistas at JPS Gallery

As the era of pandemic restrictions near the end across the globe, living under circumstances which demanded isolation and social distancing for so long has forced us to show tremendous resilience whilst adapting to the rapidly changing social structure. The group exhibition Sweeping Vistas invites six contemporary artists born or based in Hong Kong to present intuitive observations of their inner landscape through sweeping vistas threaded with uncertainty, possibility and imagination. Our diverse coping methods to the “new normal” is analogous to Cynthia Mak, Elaine Chiu, Gianluca Crudele, Lokz Phoenix, Ticko Liu and Tobe Kan’s disparate artistic practices.

Imagine yourself looking over a sweeping vista, what do you see? Is it a place you wish to travel to or a place of familiarity? How does the vista make you feel? The group of artists was encouraged to create based on this prompt at a time when they began coming out of these long periods of isolation where they were forced to confront issues and traumas they had chosen to overlook.

Ranging from realistic depictions of European forests and Hong Kong cityscapes, where the artists capture the scope of these vistas through observation and engaging elements of nature and cityscape that are easily overlooked. To paintings of extraterrestrial and metaphorical landscapes with a haunting and magical quality that reflects the artists’ ever-evolving imaginations and visions of beauty. Each artist’s approach, interpretation and presentation of a landscape and cityscape were uniquely different, presenting a series of paintings that is a continual cascade of form and meaning.

Dan Oliver: Our Nature at JPS Gallery

Dan Oliver: Our Nature at JPS Gallery

Our Nature has a double meaning. It is both human nature and the world to which we belong. It is the outer reality of earth, water, fire, and sky and our inner reality in which these poetic elements become symbolic. The material of nature becomes the language of the psyche. This body of paintings is an observation of the world, but not just with the eye. It is also how we see the world through the mind’s eye, where the ordinary takes on additional meaning. Broken leafless branches become metaphors for frustration, disruption, or mortality. Trees feel like human figures, flourishing or battered by time. Structures intended to endure are all returned to nature, burned or melted. Everything is in flux. We recognise the persistence of life in growing greenery and identify with that striving. Water is a calming resource but also a potential threat whose depths conceal the unknown. The world is inherently teeming with both danger and beauty. The threat of climate change creates a sense of urgency and complicates this balance. This sense of impending danger becomes a metaphor for our social and psychic catastrophes. Like the mind in dreams, these paintings redeploy the imagery of nature to represent the self. As in our dreams, the paintings are nature imagining itself.

JPS Gallery is honoured to present Wilson Shieh “Chop Suey 2008-2022”, artist’s first solo exhibition with our gallery in Hong Kong. Wilson Shieh’s unparalleled artisanal skills and ability to modernise the quintessence of traditional Chinese art make him one of the most prominent artists in Hong Kong. Bringing together works created between 2008 to 2022, this exhibition will provide an overview of Shieh’s evolution as an artist while he expands his practice integrating contemporary imagery inspired by Hong Kong’s local pop culture into his works.

“Chop Suey” refers to a dish in American Chinese cuisine consisting of meat, egg and vegetables stir-fried in corn-starch-thickened sauce. The diversity of ingredients in this dish manifests this exhibition’s central theme, a visual testimony of all the phases and salient moments of Shieh’s artistic evolution over the past fourteen years. He began practising gongbi in 1992 and has since become widely recognised for using this traditional fine-brush technique to paint contemporary figurative imageries. And in 2008, Shieh started to expand his practice by utilising various mediums. Ranging from pencil drawings, digital print collages, oil and acrylic on canvas, the presented works continue to illustrate contemporary scenes in his signature style, allowing viewers to witness Hong Kong’s cultural background morph over time through the artist’s practice.

“All our knowledge has its origins in our perceptions.” — Leonardo da Vinci

Following the theme of a past group exhibition inspired by another one of da Vinci’s quotes “saper vedere” (“knowing how to see”) which demonstrated artists’ understanding of ‘seeing’, the group exhibition Sense6 is a further attempt to explore the subject of basic human senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, as well as the sixth sense. The exhibition features artworks by six contemporary artists Edu Carrillo, Gab More, Maxwell McMaster, Natan Heber, Paul Hunter Speagle and Qin Tan, all newly created for this exhibition.

Aristotle is credited with first numbering the senses in his work De Anima. It is him who noted the ‘big five’ among the senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Modern science suggests that there are far more senses than Aristotle thought, nevertheless his philosophy of the five senses had become the gateway to reality. According to his followers, they disclose reality in a reliable way and the portion of reality they disclose is considered to be quite generous. Sense6 presents a way of experiencing reality through five basic senses as well as the magical sixth sense which Aristotle forgot to include. Vision, audition, olfaction, gustation and tactition are practical faculties that help us navigate and stay well-informed about the complex world we live in. The sixth sense on the other hand can be described as a keen intuitive power, an ability to know something without using the ordinary five senses, or as a perception of reality. Sense6 offers us an extrasensory perception of reality presented by six artists through their works and practices.

JPS Gallery is pleased to present Embrace, a solo exhibition of Japanese artist Reina, on view at the gallery’s Hong Kong location. Following her previous exhibition Mythology at the gallery’s location in Tokyo earlier this year, Reina continues to explore the theme of mythologies and references a complex range of historic iconographies to comment upon the current relationship between humans and nature. In this presented series of paintings, Reina expands her artistic practice by introducing new characters to the viewers and experimenting with the possibilities of painting on stones.

A highlight of this exhibition is a special series of works that involves a canvas work paired with a stone that has Reina’s ‘Dreamrock’ character painted upon it. The inclusion of a natural element echoes the philosophy of this presented exhibition and symbolises the artist’s desire to ignite a conversation on the underlying principle of the natural order.

In the present day, we seem to have forgotten how to live in harmony with nature. Therefore, Reina often depicts the characters embracing each other to express how the giving and receiving relationship between humanity and all beings are inextricably linked. Through an Embrace, viewers are encouraged to think about the ramifications of humanity’s arrogant and exploitative attitude towards nature.

"Time, because it is so fleeting, time, because it is beyond recall, is the most precious of human goods." — William Somerset Maugham

JPS Gallery is thrilled to present Life's Currents, the first exhibition of Paris-based French artist Julieth Mars Toussaint, featuring new works inspired by the artist's exploration around our everyday contemporary life. In an era of profound change and in the face of an uncertain future for all human beings, Julieth invites the viewers to pay attention to our feelings and life experiences through his use of light, colours, lines, textures and movements in his work by being completely present in the current moment without any distractions.

For the artist's first collaboration with a gallery in Hong Kong, he proposes his body of work with a focus on humankind's relationship with the current society, and interior scenes of our everyday life. Julieth strives to refine and reinterpret his techniques and palettes by continuing to develop his concept of psychological paintings with expressive brushstrokes and clashing and vibrant colours, unfolding his inner self and emotional states in front of the audience, rather than depicting true to life paintings.

Following the exhibitions Life like a galaxy railway in 2020 and Space Time of Love in 2021, The End is Another Beginning is the third instalment of the Galaxy Exhibitions and the end of the series temporarily.

In this vast universe, life has its own master and everyone has an orbit of their own. Some companions would travel along the journey, and some may be passing by. At the moment, I think it is time to sum up this project of three years. Although it is the terminus station, it does not mean the end. The terminus often is the starting point to another place.

The past three years have been the most significant turning point in my life. During this period, I have experienced a mixture of emotions. Painting has become my emotional outlet, reflecting upon my life, my feelings, and my passions. The works created over the past three years have brought me to the peak of my creative journey, and I cherish these works very much as they are a testimony of this.

This series of paintings transports viewers back to primordial times through a unique, contemporary lens. Inspired by the story of Adam & Eve, the artist depicts the transformation of the human psyche from a state of innocence to that of consciousness. She explores the different psychological stages of the becoming of man through the use of a stick-like figurine in a world filled with vibrant landscapes and earthly delights. With a stick-like silhouette of just four limbs, a head, and non-descript body, the figurine epitomises the most basic and fundamental form of human being. Characteristic of the figurine are it’s genderless, raceless, undefined and ambiguous qualities, allowing it to manifest itself as a “universal man”.

Prodip Leung: Odd Fellas at JPS Gallery

The universe is infinite, and the possibilities are endless.

Driven by his interest in extra-terrestrial life and the origin of humanity, Prodip has been an avid researcher on the philosophies related to these topics, and this enthusiasm has had a profound impact on his art. Most of Prodip's paintings result from his vivid imagination of the mingled ideas and stories drawn upon his research on myths and legends of ancient civilisations, then presented with a playful spin and unique colour palette.

Staying true to his mode of creating, Odd Fellas is infused with a rebellious spirit and unconventional humour. The tone and atmosphere of each work are built on distinctive colour textures and linework. Prodip uses simplistic forms to manifest the ancient and alien civilisations he saw through his eyes, illustrating his journey of exploration on occultism, the supernatural and the origins of art.
