we have to be very strong at Wyndham Social

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Wyndham Social gladly presents we have to be very strong, a collaborative exploration through installation, participatory creative sessions and a workshop series on the neglected, intimate personal spaces in our urban daily lives in collaboration with a group of local artists and creative units.

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the rhythm that individuals experience is primarily dominated by social rhythms. Each day, at almost the same time, individuals perform nearly the same tasks alone, with their daily lives generally divided into similar segments: work time, commuting time, and sleeping time. In non-places such as the lobbies of commercial buildings, during daily commutes and lunch hours, everyone tends to head towards nearly the same destinations before moving on to the next, with all linear time pointing in a specific direction. Immersed in this flow, personal emotions become numb and feel inconsequential.

Opening Reception: 17th October 6:30 – 8:30pm

With performance by Sonia Wong and VIOLA at 7:15pm and 8:00pm

Gallery Address: G/F, 33 Wyndham Street, Central

Project: As If ___ : Pixelated Chronicles at Wyndham Social

Stories of two hundred and sixty-three islands, pixelated into images that encapsulate tales of Hong Kong.

This exhibition starts with the hidden stories of Hong Kong’s islands, drawing on Aldo Rossi’s framework of urban studies and Brian McGrath’s concept of “islands as urban artifacts” to seek exploration in lands away from the gaps of the city. It discusses how islands, as city pixels, challenge traditional development concepts, awaken memories forgotten by time, and inspire reflection on how the city should be shaped by everyone who cherishes this land.

Artist Mandy MA Wing Man at Wyndham Social

Artist Mandy MA Wing Man at Wyndham Social

Wyndham Social gladly presents Bubble Reveries, a site-specific installation by Hong Kong artist Mandy MA Wing Man. Inspired by the movements of passers-by in Central, Ma weaves dreamcatcher-like nets to explore the splendour of dreams with the audience.

Day and night intersect in the bustling Central district. From the commercial buildings teeming with people during the day, to the inebriated, sleepless streets when the lights are low, people are constantly busy, endlessly searching for the dreams in their hearts. Dreams are as ephemeral as bubbles—short-lived but enticing yet destined to dissipate. They oscillate between the transient and the eternal, the separated and the belonging, just like the hurried pedestrians in Central, always contemplating the relationship between the individual and the collective, the ideal and the reality, in modern urban life.

Sophia Hotung: Choreopolis at Wyndham Social

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Eurasian artist Sophia Hotung suffered from autoimmune diseases at the age of 16 and could only walk with mobility aids. Returning to the world outside her bedroom as Hong Kong began emerging from its first year of the pandemic, Sophia discovered a newfound appreciation for the city's vibrant energy and settings. The excitement of movement sparked a vision of dancing in the streets and celebrating the once mundane thoroughfares with exuberance.

Sophia’s latest collection, "Choreopolis”, featuring 10 original artworks presented in 24x24 inch circular formats, along with other formats, will be showcased to the public at Wyndham Social from March 14 to April 28. "Choreopolis" serves as a compelling reflection on the intricate roles we play in society, as passers-by are transformed into members of high-octane musical theatre ensembles. Drawing inspiration from the thoroughfares of Hong Kong, Hotung celebrates the joy of traversing everyday locations, infusing her artwork with the pulsating rhythm of crosswalks, roads, transport links, and walkways. Through fast-paced backgrounds, dynamic dancers, and a recurring motif of circles and spheres, Hotung masterfully captures the essence of movement and spontaneity. Presented by a|n Gallery in Collaboration with Wyndham Social

Francesco Lietti: Beyond the Mirage at Wyndham Social

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Wyndham Social is proud to present Francesco Lietti’s solo show, Beyond the Mirage, in collaboration with Young Soy Gallery.

Reminiscent of the excitement of arriving by air to a faraway place, Beyond the Mirage encapsulates the plethora of sensations felt as one first enters this eclectic metropolis. Familiarity bleeding into strangeness, Lietti captures the overflowing promises of opportunity, the complex feelings of density, energy, and vibrancy of Asian cities within a cacophony of bright colours.

Through gentle abstraction, Lietti renders reality into a two-dimensional plane, evoking the sense of celebration and surprise that the city brings to us in every moment of every day. Whether it be the rolling hills, the matrix of skyscrapers, or even the fresh laundry hanging on balconies, Lietti does not fail to enliven the remarkably dense yet immensely human quality of this unique city in his oeuvre. Beyond the Mirage solicits us to see that tangled within the abstracted cityscape lies the true essence of a tightly-knit community, awakening a vision of ourselves as we really are and as we can be.
