Not exactly a recreation of Matsuo Bashō’s journey to Japan’s north — but maybe Bashō himself would prefer trains and ferries. It was a challenging journey back then, it is a challenging journey now. The Northern region with its austere beauty, eerie atmosphere and (sadly) economic decline and depopulation is not the most popular destination among both tourists and locals. But it was a journey worth taking back then, and it is a journey worth taking now.
