Dreamedcore at Gold, Serakai Studio

This exhibition adds a lot of material to my growing curiosity about the nostalgia phenomenon, specifically about anemoia, nostalgia for a time you’ve never known.
The title of the show refers to the concept of Chinese dreamcore, an internet surreal aesthetic inspired by the paradoxical mixture of liminal spaces, unsettling scenes, nostalgic feeling, cosy atmosphere, and the glitchy internet of the early 2000s. As someone who lived through the 2000s, I vividly remember them as a time of rapid change around the world, and they definitely contributed to shaping the dreams, goals, and values of the whole generation. It was pre-social-media time; the world felt smaller, dreams seemed reachable, and we were young and energetically stupid — a lot to be nostalgic about (would we want to go back? I doubt it). But seeing those times interpreted by a new generation as a surreal recreation of vague memories of MySpace, new shopping malls, and glossy-ads-inspired childhood dreams really strikes me. Every generation has a period in history they romanticise; I guess I am finally old enough to be seeing the 2000s as that period now.
Definitely an exhibition to visit and ponder upon.
