Janice Laujan: Memory & Punishment at Gold, Serakai Studio

Janice Laujan: Memory & Punishment at Gold, Serakai Studio

It was possible to see Janice Laujan, the lead vocalist of the David Boring band, and the artist behind this sound installation/experience, performing alongside the Creatures. However, it was the performers who made this experimental show truly memorable for me. Wandering around like shadows in the Elysium, spiralling nonstop as if they are stuck in Dante’s circles of hell, moaning and growling, clashing and collapsing. Raw and visceral. Scary and mesmerising. Alien and comforting.
Oh, and of course, you can’t name an exhibition Memory and Punishment and expect a Slavic girl not to associate the title with Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. I suppose this is a limbo garden for all the sinners who can’t let their memories go, punishing primarily themselves.

Exhibition period: 22.08–3.10
Gallery address: G/F, Remex Centre, Wong Chuk Hang
