We recognize things by depending on the context in which they are placed.

 Food looks like food because it sits on a table. Animals look like animals because they exist in nature. Toys look like toys because they are held in a child's hands. Context is the invisible foundation that supports the "meaning" of things. In the paintings of this exhibition, the motifs have no such foundation. Snap peas float in a void, a moose stands indoors, a beluga whale exists within darkness.

They arrive on the retina as things we have surely seen before, yet we cannot tell where they are. Familiarity and strangeness overlap on the same image. The longer we look, the more what we thought we knew begins to recede. The feeling is strangely quiet — closer to suspension than to unease. And at the same time, the opposite is also true: what was unfamiliar gradually draws near, through the quiet form of painting.
