Janice Laujan: Memory & Punishment at GOLD, Serakai Studio

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Serakai Studio has commissioned Memory & Punishment, a sound installation and durational performance by the artist and musician Janice Laujan, lead vocalist of the post-punk band DAVID BORING.

Bearing semblance to a garden, Memory & Punishment is a self-contained world of sound, mind, and body, seemingly caught in the process of metamorphosis between what is natural and alien. To enter, visitors take off their shoes and step onto a plush undulating purple floor and a world of muffled sounds, dimmed lights and a faint haze. Absorbed into a network of resonances where everything touched can also be heard, visitors contribute with each movement to an acoustic ecology in which sound is never fixed. The space becomes a sonic source in its own right, inviting visitors to linger, listen, and eventually be engulfed, as the distinction between visitor and environment dissolves.

At its core, Memory & Punishment emerges from a simple observation: there are remarkably few spaces in contemporary life that offer a place where challenging recollections may simply be inhabited rather than summarily resolved. Shame, grief, and other such unpleasant emotions are usually relegated to the private realm and remain largely invisible. Conceived as a social environment beyond home and work, the garden suspends the ordinary relations that structure daily life, offering a place where unresolved memories can be embraced.
