We are proud to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Shamate culture and aesthetics with an artistic intervention by its cult leader.

Shamate (殺馬特) is a Southern Chinese working-class youth subculture that emerged in the 2006, primarily among rural migrant factory workers in southern China.A transliteration of the English word ”smart“, written with Chinese characters that mean ”kill“ (sha), ”horse“ (ma), and ”special/uniqueness“ (te). Founder Luo Fuxing first posted photos on QQ in 2006.
