Faan1jik6 Zi1gaan1 (In Between Translations) at Square Street Gallery
Language by default is a social construct, a concept we agreed upon, an established attempt to transfer some existing reality into abstract sounds that will carry the coded meanings. Language is never equivalent to communication. Language is a lie. The medium is the message. The method of communication can be more impactful than the actual content. It’s a miracle that more
things aren’t lost in the translation, let alone that some — are found.
Moving to new countries, learning new languages will always change you, giving inevitably a feeling of loss, not only extending. But there are things that just
stay in that in-betweenness, not here and not there, not lost but maybe not discovered, unexpressed, untranslated, untransferred.
Chan Melody, Yan Wai Yin Winnie, Yip Kai Chun. Curated by Amandine Vabre Chau.
Exhibition period: 29.01–7.03
