Darren Almond: Night Before Day at White Cube
Might as well be called The Wind in the Willows. Or The Gilded Time. Or anything else, because what strikes me during the press preview is how many of the personal memories and impressions inspire these paintings and how little of the artist as a protagonist can be seen in them. Yes, the recurring motif of a willow tree is obvious, and the zero symbol in the centre of most artworks is noticeable as a visual anchor, but it doesn’t reveal much about the artist’s connection to nature or fascination with numbers and all things analogue. However, he mentioned the importance of impermanence and transition, which also makes perfect sense.
Exhibition period: 18.07–30.08
