Maria Lassnig: Self With Dragon at Hauser&Wirth

Maria Lassnig: Self With Dragon at Hauser&Wirth

What may seem like grotesque abstracted forms are in fact, self-portraits. An artist, an educator, a prominent figure in the Austrian art scene, she used the term “body awareness” to describe her approach. There’s a specific code to read them: for example, the depicted parts of the body are the ones she was actually feeling while working on the painting. The colours can also convey additional information, like red for pain or intense feeling. And yes, here be dragons.
