Yukihisa Isobe, Tetsuo Mizù: Traces at Whitestone Gallery

There’s an interesting rhyme between “coat of arms” patterns by Yukihisa Isobe and the international maritime signal flags that Tetsuo Mizù was inspired by. Both series of works are based on signaling systems, created to convey important information in a bright, recognizable visual form. Both systems were meant to be universally recognised but, paradoxically, ended up in a variety of alphabets and regional meanings. Both artists drifted away from the literal meaning of the codes that inspired them into abstract, open-to-interpretation areas.
