Michelle Fung: Northlandia in the Making at HKUST Library

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Northlandia in the Making presents Northlandia, a fictional country developed by Michelle Fung as part of her long-term project 2084. The exhibition focuses on how Northlandia is continually in the making.

Observing, Imagining, Making and Continuing mark four interconnected modes of the artist’s practice, bringing together 30 Arctic photographs, 30 Arctic sky paintings, a newly envisioned world map, a ready-made installation made from glacier ice and the ongoing production of the double-channel, hand-painted and hand-carved Northlandia animation (to be completed at the end of 2026) and its original woodblocks.

Drawing on her experiences during Arctic residencies in 2022 and 2026, Fung translates observations of landscape, light, climate and time into an imagined world with its own geography, forms of life and social structures.

Another question at the center of the exhibition is what a fictional country might allow us to see about the world we inhabit. Through Northlandia, Fung approaches reality through fiction, offering a complicated perspective on life in an age of climate change and our changing relationship with the environment around us.
