Eugène Carrière: Out of the Shadows at Sotheby’s Maison

Eugène Carrière: Out of the Shadows at Sotheby’s Maison

Emerging from darkness, blurry and dreamlike, ethereal and soft. Eigengrau, that’s what they made me think of (also called dark light, or brain gray, it is that gray color the human brain produces in the absence of light). Masterful grisailles, gorgeous technique. So glad to see them in real life after reading all the praise he — rightfully — received.
By the way, Eugène Carrière was one of the close friends and favorite artists of Ilya Mechnikov, who contributed to the popularity and influence of Carrièr in Russia at that time. His name is even mentioned in one of the poems by Mayakovsky, but I wasn’t able to find an English translation.
