Shaqúelle Whyte: Nine nights; Strange fruit at White Cube

Shaqúelle Whyte: Nine nights; Strange fruit at White Cube

Even though the title refers to the blend of familial mourning and celebration in Jamaican tradition, these paintings aren’t gloomy and dark (but yes, I made a silly joke about bad feng shui; in my defense, who would resist?)
The atmosphere of such events is captured with precision: shapes are multiplied, the composition shifts your focus to small details, and the figures are blurred — much like memories often are. However, it’s still more about the gathering rather than the tragic departure.

Exhibition period: 6.02–14.03
