Dave Chow Yiu Wang: Reinstatement Works at Square Street Gallery
One of the common questions asked by people intending to visit the exhibition is “Are you open?”. To be fair, the exhibition indeed looks like construction chaos, unwelcoming and uninviting. And the moment you get in this feeling will only intensify with the dusty smell and the ill at ease sounds.
Step into the first room and experience the discomfort of the Labyrinth, where the danger is not in the chance of being lost or meeting the Minotaur in any form or interpretation, but rather in the structure of the Labyrinth itself. The crumbling debris of the ceiling in the second room continues the theme of spatial discomfort, reminding you of all the office spaces and other centers of bureaucracy you’ve visited.
However, the exhibition is not a critique of the workplaces per se, but rather a reminder of the artificiality of the cautious attitude we have to learn when navigating social landscapes, adjusting and readjusting ourselves to fit, or at least not to damage ourselves.
